The damsons come from two crooked trees behind the shop, topped up in good years by fruit from farms down the valley. Slow-set with nothing but sugar and lemon, sharp enough to matter. Have it on the sourdough, or spooned over rice pudding when nobody is watching.

From the farm
From August to November the preserving pans barely cool. Damsons, apples and whatever the hedges allow go into jars the old way, in batches small enough to argue over.
